Destroyed

She looked up. Yes, he was home. Standing against the black sky, he made an imposing figure. She was so proud of hime. He was hers, only hers, totally, completely. He belonged to her. Her son. He was so strong, she felt unprotected when he was around, and protective when he was. The biggest fear in her life was that something would happen to him, he would be taken away from her. He was all she had. Her family, her fortune. The only thing that her love had given her. He was a love child. He hadn't known that till one day some body had teased him about it at his school. He was barely eleven then. He was nearly 22 now. It had been tough on him, she knew. All these years that she had kept him from the truth. But his father was her one and only love. He was so brave, so strong, so handsome. His son was exactly like him, she felt. And that endeared her son to her even more.
She was worried, he was returning almost an hour later than usual these days. They worked him too hard at that place. She was sure to have a word about this to his boss tomoroow when he was away. He would resent her interference, she knew, so it would have to be kept from him. He was so independent and so stubborn, just like Micheal. James was Micheal's image. She wondered if people were right in saying she spoilt him? No, it couldn't be. He was so unspoilt, fresh, dependable, just like Micheal had been.
James entered the room from the French windows and went to his mother sitting on her rocking chair by the fire. He kissed her on her cheek as she raised her face to return his greeting. Her blue eyes were looking as mysterious as ever, so full of sorrows and a dulled sense of life in them. He had never seen even a photograph of his father, but his mother always said that he was exactly like him. He felt afraid for his mother at times. She loved him too much. He wondered if she could bear separation from him? He doubted it. But separation was inevitable. He would have tell his mother about Alice someday. He didn't know if she would be able to share him with anyone else. He knew that his love for his mother would never lessen, she was his family, all he had had until Alice had come into his life. Alice understood. She was an amazing person. He wondered if he even deserved such an angel in his life. Such angels he should say. His mother and Alice. Two people who were his strength, who he loved the most in the world. Would mother ever forgive Alice for being who she was?
Agatha got up from her chair and called out for Marrion. Marrion had been with her since she had first moved into this house. This had been Micheal and her dream house. They had decided to live here after they got married. He left this house to her name. He had wanted to give it to her as their marraige gift...that day which never came. She realized two months after his death that she was carrying his child. That was when she regained her life. James hardly knew that he had brought back life to an Agatha who had given up on life. She did not look like a woman who could leave off living, she was very strong willed. But her eyes were very vulnerable, they said all that her lips left unsad. Marrion knew this better than anyone. He had been there while Agatha regained her life. He had seen her struggle against her family and friends who had wanted her to begin her life anew without Micheal. They had never seen the madness in her eyes when she talked about her son. Even before she had seen her baby, she had known it would be a boy. He would be Micheal's James. Micheal and she had been discussing names, he had wanted to change his name to James when he was 12. She smiled when she thought of it. James and Micheal, the two most beautiful names in the world.
James looked at his mother as she returned to her seat. He wondered if her mother would ever accept Alice. He realized all that his mother must have endured to have brought him into this world. All that she must have faced. All she must have lost to have gained him. He wondered if he had been worth it. She had lost her youth, her family, friends, freedom, everything. And he was almost destroying all she had built, he was betraying her. No he was not! He had to stop thinking like that! For did he not have the right to fall in love too? Shouldn't his mother understand that? After all, she knew what it was to be in love... He could not give up Alice. He was determined. If only having Alice didn't mean leaving mother...! What wouldn't he give!
Marrion looked at him with calm gray eyes as he placed a glass of water in front of James. James found himself avoiding their penetrating gaze. He knew why. Marrion knew. Marrion knew all about it. James didn't know how he could, but was sure of his instincts. He would have to talk.
"Is Master James in love?"
The words were out of Marrion's mouth... James saw them hanging in the air in front of him. He could feel them pentrating his mother's finely shaped ears; as they made contact with her brain. She knew now. Why her son was late. She wondered what she felt... anger, fear, jealousy? Why hadn't he told her himself? That angered her. Who was this girl? Did she even deserve her son, her precious, whom she had made into this fine man? That was jealousy. Would she take him away? Away from her? That spoke fear.
"Is it true?" she asked. Her voice betraying no trace of emotion. Not a sign of the storm that raged inside her head.
James nodded once slowly in assent.
There was a pause in the air. Till Agatha mustered up her wits to ask the next question. James was being unusually reticent.
"Who is it?" a hint of curiosity. Who could have swindled her carefully brought up boy of his heart? Who knew the sophistry?
"Alice. Alice CarMicheal." James looked up, straight into his mother's clear green eyes, a defiance in his own. Without a flicker of a muscle, you could sense that he had drawn himself up for a battle.
There was a silence so thick you could slice through it. The tension was tangible. Marrion looked from mother to son. He had been waiting many years for this day. It was good that it come as soon as it would.
"Her father killed yours. In cold blood. Or have you forgotten?" she continued. Harshly, calmly. Bobby CarMicheal's daughter. No wonder. Like father, like daughter. Brainwashing her son.
"I have not forgotten. Though how you think I can forget what i don't remember, i don't know. It is not him, but Alice I love. I hadn't meant to surprise you with it this way. I am sorry if it has caused you pain."
"Pain? I am not new to it. But i don't blame you. I shall see her. Bring her to me. Tomorrow I shall meet her, not you."
James knew it wasn't over yet.
"As you say, mother. If you want you shall meet her now."
"No. Tomorrow." And she swept back to her own quarters.
Neither slept that night.
